If you’re considering an abortion, it is vital first to learn more about your pregnancy through an ultrasound scan.

Ultrasounds reveal details about your pregnancy, like the viability, age, location, and determine if you’re eligible for an abortion.

It may seem simpler to forgo an ultrasound.  It is imperative to understand this information about your pregnancy before undergoing any procedure for the sake of YOUR health.

What is An Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a safe and painless procedure that uses sound waves to create a picture. It displays the uterus and surrounding structures and provides important information about the development of your pregnancy.

Viability

An ultrasound technician examines the pregnancy to see if it is viable, meaning there is a detectable heartbeat.

Up to 20% of pregnancies end in natural miscarriage. If there is no heartbeat and you have miscarried, an abortion procedure would NOT be necessary.

You may pass the pregnancy at home naturally, but you may need additional medical assistance in some cases.  It is critical  to know the reasons for seeking treatment.

Age

Ultrasound technology can also measure the pregnancy and determine the gestational age.

Age is a key detail in eligibility for an abortion, and according to the FDA, the abortion pill should not be administered after 10 weeks or 70 days of pregnancy. Doing so could lead to serious health complications.

While you may calculate the gestational age according to your last menstrual period, a woman’s period alone is not a reliable indicator of pregnancy age.

Location

The ultrasound technician will also examine where the pregnancy has been implanted. If the pregnancy is growing outside the uterus, it is considered to be an ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancies require immediate medical intervention and cannot be treated by an abortion.
